Information, Knowledge, Wisdom & Original Insight

These words are often used interchangeably, yet they describe different forms of understanding.

Information is knowing what exists. It consists of facts, ideas, opinions, definitions and the accumulated knowledge of others.

Knowledge is understanding that information. It involves recognising relationships, seeing patterns and knowing how different ideas fit together.

Wisdom is the ability to evaluate knowledge against reality. It asks not only, Is this true?, but also When is it true?, For whom?, and How useful is it in practice?

Original insight is something different again. It is the capacity to notice patterns that have not yet been clearly articulated, to reorganise existing ideas into a more coherent framework, or to express reality in a way that reveals something previously unseen.

Reading can provide information. Reflection can transform information into knowledge. Experience can cultivate wisdom. Observation, curiosity and careful thinking can generate original insight.

None automatically leads to the next.
